Daoud Retires from the Department of Anesthesiology with Over Twenty-Five Years of Service
By Sara B. Robertson, M.D.

Through the years Dr. Raouf Daoud has become a departmental staple over . I can remember him from when I was a wide-eyed medical student, and he was always willing to teach me anything I wanted to know about anesthesia. He truly took the time to know each trainee and cared about each one’s education. He was and continues to be, kind and compassionate to his patients, trainees and colleagues. After more than 20 years in the department, Daoud retired recently. Daoud said this when asked what this department has meant to him through the years:
“I joined the department of Anesthesiology in 1994. It has been an enjoyable journey where I saw both the department and the UMC grow tremendously! We only had 16 ORs in one hospital. Then the new hospital, critical care tower, Wiser and Batson were added. I have worked with five Chairs and two interim Chairs. We grew from about 20 faculty to about 55 and from 22 CRNAs to almost 90!! I have seen the residency program improve a lot and the number of residents increase.
Many things have changed for better, and also the workload has increased. As I am on the Service Track (90% service), I did my best to provide the best and safest service to our patients. I was pleased to know that on productivity I produced ASA units at the 90th percentile on MGMA benchmark with highest units at 20,110 for 2018!
I work with a group of the finest and best people! We shared tough times as well as good ones. I always felt that everyone in the department is close family to me. I will never forget the outpouring of love and support I received after my heart surgery in 2012. Even in my last week at work and beyond, I have been overwhelmed by the show of love and support by participating and contributing to the farewell parties, gifts, e-mails, texts, calls and Facebook comments!! That made it even harder to separate from such an incredible and amazing group.
Words are not enough to express my appreciation and love to everyone I worked with, and I hope that our friendship will continue for years to come.”
We will miss you, Dr. Daoud!! Congratulations on your retirement!
